Memorial to the assassination of Kārlis Ulmanis

In 1928, Pēteris Purviņš (1895. Laudona parish Greizkalni - 1966, Ventspils), a candidate for the position of forester, proposed to hold the first Forest Days in Varakļāni on May 12, 1928, but since 1930 they have been widespread throughout Latvia. The Forest Days of 1934 took place in Lubāna on May 10-12. On May 10, 3 memorial oaks were planted in the place where the assassination of Prime Minister Kārlis Ulmanis took place 14 years ago. It happened on April 15, 1920, and an excavated pit was still visible at the site. Representatives of Lubāna's organizations, schools and intelligentsia responded to the call to plant memorial oaks and planted oaks together. The Forest Days Committee participated in the planting of memorial oaks. They were located on new farm land, the owner of which has given his consent.
Two photos were also published in the edition of the Central Committee of the Forest Days - "Prime Minister K. Ulmanis on a trip to Lubāna in April 1920". On August 11, 1939, a memorial plaque was erected at the place where on April 15, 1920, an assassination attempt was made on the highway Lubāns - Dzelzava in a wooded area against Kārlis Ulmanis, who was the Prime Minister of Latvia at that time.

During the Soviet era, this plaque was destroyed.

The photograph, taken by Lubāna's photographer Alfreds Grāvers (1877-1954), shows the arrival of Kārlis Ulmanis in Lubāna after the failed assassination attempt.

On November 18, 1988, representatives of the human rights group "Helsinki 86" installed a restored memorial in the previous place.
On August 11, 1989, a rally took place in "Liedeskrog", about which journalist Inese Andersone wrote in the newspaper "Madonas Atmoda":
"I know that the enthusiasm of Latvians through hundreds of years will be connected to your name" - these lines, which Andrejs Pumpurs said about the hero of our legend Lāčplēsis, now, remembering the President of his country Kārlis Ulmanis, we can fully apply them to the President. On the evening of August 11, Indulis Zvirgzdiņš, a folkloreist and museologist, said at the opening of a rally dedicated to the 69th anniversary of the Latvia-Russia Peace Treaty and the consecration of the monument to K. Ulmanis. But we, those present, together with what he told, got into the events of the past, which marked this place in April 1920 (here the red partisans tried to commit a terrorist act against K. Ulmanis). We also returned to the present, because as many speakers confirmed - V. Lācis, Ž. Bezmers, K. Doropoļskis, J. Vidiņš - the meeting is important if we connect this memory with today. May our memory always tell us who we can believe and who we can't! May we and believe in the idea of independence! Thanks to the Madona district branch of the group "Helsinki - 86" for the given time, for the renaissance of this deliberately grown place and memory ".
The newspaper also published a photo of Jeanne Bezmer, in which we see a memorial stone with a plaque and a folklore priest Albert Cimanovski addressing those present.
