Excerpts from local history enthusiast Aivars Vilnius tell about history and its evidence found in Lode and Liepa, now in Cēsi county.

"Red clay land, bricks, 400-million-year-old armadillos, a city of rocks, whose sandstone walls reveal the entire history of Latvia, overgrown foundations of houses - in a place where the pre-war Latvian elite once gathered. And all this in Liepa Parish of Priekuļi County, behind the unattractive blockhouses of the Soviet era, which nature lovers, turning up their noses, pass by.
(..) Aivars knows almost everything about "Lodi", bricks and Liepa. He was born in Liepā, and his entire family history is connected with the "Lodes" factory, where he applied for a job in 1977, just after finishing high school, and is still working there. Like his father, Aivars continues to study the history of the parish, focusing especially on the history of brickmaking, which has become the biggest passion of his life.
(..) In 1973, when the Gauja National Park was founded, not only the kilometer-long sandstone wall [Līču – Langģu klints], but also the inscriptions on it came under the protection of the state. (..)
Scratches on rock walls reveal an alternative history: some are clear, others are impossible to decipher. (..)
"Krylov 1942." This inscription is known to Aivars. "During the German occupation, Russian prisoners of war were thrown into the peasants' houses, so I understood that one of them had scratched the inscription. I thought, the regime was not so harsh at all, if the prisoners could go for a walk. Later I found out that "Lejas Lodēs" was a prison camp at that time. A captive named Krylov came from a Georgian noble family and worked for the Germans as a translator. He was privileged and was friends with the owner of Kalna Lode. When a German officer was shot in Liepa in 1942, the POW camp was moved to Valka." (..) "1909 year K. Maizitis." Aivars admits that Kārlis Maizītis, who fell in the battle near Pinkai in 1919 and was buried in the Liepa cemetery, left his autograph here when he was young.
(..) One inscription seems particularly significant to Aivars Vilni. "Fires" is written in neat handwriting in large letters and the date next to it: June 19, 1949. You can guess that, unlike others, this one was not made just like that. "March was the time of removals, and June was the time of graduations. There is no such house name or surname on this side. I admit that after the war "Uguņi" was a group of young people with a militant attitude. This, of course, is only a fantasy on the subject, because there is no evidence.”
(..) It's raining heavily, we get stuck in the clay, but we don't give up - slowly lifting our feet covered with clay, we wade on. "All paleontologists in the world know the Lode clay quarry," Aivars begins. In the spring of 1970, geologist Visvaldis Kuršs discovered Devonian fish fossils in a clay quarry. It was a whole cemetery. What was unique about the find was that, for the first time in the history of paleontology, whole fish fossils, and not just fragments, were found. The discovery caused a revolution in science, because it was proved that the species of armadillo - Asterolepis ornata looked different than it was believed before, that is, it had a long tail. However, it all started on a spring afternoon in 1970, when Anna Babre stood in the quarry and counted the loads. The work was already coming to an end, when Anna noticed that in some place a flat plane was formed, in which various bones were visible. It was she, crossing her arms over her head, who stopped the bulldozers and went to the boss to tell her about the discovery. Excavations continued under the leadership of geologist Lyubova Lyarska. Some of the Devonian fish fossils found in the "Lodes" quarry can be viewed in the Latvian Nature Museum."
